Let’s be serious, there’s no war – we’ve got animals to save! But there are some major differences between leading a Plant-Based lifestyle versus a Vegan one. Common misconceptions start with the diets.
1) What does a Plant-Based Diet mean?
A plant-based diet excludes meat, fish and dairy, instead focusing on foods derived from plant sources such as fruit, nuts, vegetables, beans, grains, legumes and meat substitutes such as soy products and the avoidance of processed foods. Many people take this up as plant-based dieters are more likely to hit their 5-a-day and consume a decent amount of fibre, vitamins and minerals so it’s a great and healthy choice of lifestyle.
2) What does a Vegan Diet mean?
Vegans tend not to think of their lifestyle as a diet. The Vegan Society defines Veganism as ‘a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to animals.’ Rather than the focus being around food (which is meat free, fish free, dairy free, honey free), the importance for Vegans is to end the exploitation of animals. This mean Vegans can continue to gorge on Vegan burgers, chips and cake to their hearts content and save animals at the same time.
3) The Ethical Difference between Plant-Based and Vegan
Plant-Based people tend to adopt this lifestyle for the health reasons but continue to use animal products such as leather, silk, and honey. In comparison, the cosmetics, fashion, furniture Vegans choose are cruelty-free and free from animal products. They also don’t wear or buy products like leather, wool, silk and they don’t visit zoos, horse-racing events and aquariums or any other establishment which exploits animals.
4) The Environmentally Conscious Vegans
There’s an additional string of being Vegan which is being environmentally conscious. The more Vegans learn about the processes behind producing meat and dairy, the more environmentally conscious they also become. The process behind and consumption of meat and dairy has put a tremendous amount of pressure on the environment as the space needed to home animals has led to huge areas of deforestation, the Amazon rainforest has been affected by the livestock industry and transporting animals and the animals themselves have resulted in a huge amount of greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere. Environmentally conscious Vegans push forward their lifestyle as a means to cut down their carbon footprint and reduce their impact on the environment.
So there you have it. There’s an ethical and environmental difference of lifestyles between being Plant-Based and Vegan and in order to save the world, it looks like we’re all going to have to take part!
